The Watson Museum occupies the Queen Victoria memorial institute buildings in Jubilee Garden, Rajkot. Named in 1888 after Colonel John Watson, British political agent of the Kathiawar Agency from 1881 to 1889, it opened in 1893 in a building inaugurated by Lord George Harris, Governor of Bombay. It is the oldest museum in Saurashtra and one of seven run by the Gujarat government in the region; much of Watson's own collection is kept here.
The galleries cover the princely state of Rajkot and wider Saurashtra: finds from Mohenjodaro and other prehistoric sites, 13th-century carvings, sculptures from Ghumli, the old Jethwa capital, along with coins, paintings and manuscripts, textiles, folk embroidery, musical instruments and natural history. There is also a reference library. Each January, in the second week, the museum holds the week-long Bhartiya Shilp Samruddhi.
