01 — The story

The story

The rubber plantations at Wandoor, in the South Andaman region, cover about 931 hectares and are the largest in the Andamans, with around ten thousand trees. Rubber is one of the main crops grown on the islands, and the local climate suits it well.

Guided tours follow the whole process. Tappers cut careful grooves in the bark so that the milky latex runs into a jar fixed to each tree. The collected latex is then rolled by hand into thin sheets, and the finished sheets are stacked and sent on to factories.
