The story

Velorvattom Sri Mahadeva Temple is in Cherthala town, Alappuzha district, about a kilometre from the KSRTC bus stand on the bypass to the national highway. It is believed to have been built in the 7th century by the Azhvanchery Thamprakkal, and legend says Parasurama himself installed the Shiva idol, though the exact date of installation is unknown. It is listed among the 108 Shiva temples in the Shivalaya stotram.

The temple is one of only a few in Kerala to have two nalambalams and two flagstaffs dedicated to the deity. Many well-known Kerala families regard it as their ancestral family temple.
