The story

Manakkodam Lighthouse stands beside Andhakaranazhy beach near Cherthala in Alappuzha district. Planned in 1972 as a 30 m cylindrical tower, it was redesigned because of weak ground as a four-column reinforced concrete structure, and it was commissioned on 1 August 1979 as the first navigation light on this stretch of coast.

The square tower, 33.8 m high, is open and skeletal in its lower part and enclosed above, painted white with a red lantern. Its light flashes white twice every ten seconds; the original lamp gave way to metal halide in 1998 and to a cluster of three lamps in 2006. In 2022 the central government offered funds to develop facilities here as part of the Alappuzha marina and cargo project under Sagar Mala.
