01 — The story

The story

Veerapuram Bird Sanctuary covers about 200 hectares of woodland, lakes and ponds in the Anantapur region. Painted storks, black-headed ibis and Indian rollers live here, waterbirds use the lakes, and migrants arrive from Siberia and Central Asia. The area is also described as an important breeding site for the endangered Great Indian Bustard.

The land was declared a protected area in 1985 and became a wildlife sanctuary in 1989. In 2015 it was renamed Sri Krishnadevaraya Wildlife Sanctuary after the Vijayanagara emperor. Local tradition places a battle between Rama and Ravana on this ground.
