01 — The story

The story

Kumbhakarna Park lies near Penukonda, about 70 km from Anantapur, and is built around scenes from the Ramayana. Its main feature is a statue of Kumbhakarna, Ravana's giant brother, famed for sleeping long and eating vast amounts. The figure is 142 feet long and 32 feet high, and its belly is hollow so visitors can enter and walk around inside.

The sculpture group shows the episode in which Ravana's soldiers try to wake him for the war against Rama. Around the giant, figures beat drums at his ears, elephants push at his head, soldiers tug his hair, jab him with spears, tickle his feet and hold food near his nose. Other sculptures in the park show further episodes from the epic.
