The story

Veer Dam is a rubble-concrete dam on the Nira River near Shirwal in Satara district, at the border with Pune district and around 70 km from Pune. It generates hydroelectricity and also serves irrigation and farming in the neighbouring areas.

Around Pune it now counts as a key place for bird-watching. A 7–8 km stretch along the Nira is especially rich in birdlife, and more than 170 species are found at the dam. Birdwatchers look for bar-headed geese and demoiselle cranes, along with waders, raptors and flycatchers.
