The story

Vahisvaramudayar Temple is a cave shrine to Shiva at Malayadippatti in Kulathur taluk, some 33 km from Pudukkottai. Two cave temples are cut into the rock here, one for Shiva and one for Vishnu, the latter known as the Pallikonda Perumal Temple, and the pair are treated as a twin temple.

Shiva is worshipped here as Vahisvaramudayar, with the goddess as Periyanlayaki. An inscription of the Pallava king Nandivarman (775–826 CE) in the temple records that it was made around 730 CE by Kuvaavan Satthan, also called Vitel Vidugu Muttharayan. Pujas are held four times a day, from Kalasanthi at 7 am to Arthajamam at 8.30 pm, and the temple is open from 6 am to noon and from 5 to 8 pm.
