The story

Maanturai Amravaneswarar Temple is a Shiva temple in Manturai, a village on the outskirts of Trichy, and one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, praised by the saints Appar and Sambandar in the 7th–8th centuries. The village takes its name from the legend that Shiva gave a mango to a deer here, maan being Tamil for deer. Mrikandu, Markandeya's father, is said to have prayed to Shiva under a mango tree alongside a deer, a scene shown in stucco in the temple, and Surya, Chandra, Vishnu, Brahma and Indra are also said to have prayed here.

The Chola kings greatly enlarged the temple in the 11th century. It has a three-tiered gateway tower and a tank, with Brahma and Vishnu in the wall niches. Six daily rituals and twelve yearly festivals are held, the main one being the fifteen-day Chittirai festival in April–May, which recounts the temple's legends. The state's Hindu Religious and Endowment Board administers it.
