Vaacha, meaning voice, is a museum of Adivasi life at Tejgadh, a village beside the Orsang River and the Koraj hills about 90 km from Vadodara in eastern Gujarat. It belongs to the Adivasi Academy, an offshoot of Vadodara's Bhasha Research and Publication Centre, begun in 1998 after the linguist Ganesh N. Devy left university work to settle in this largely Rathwa village. Run by local men and women, it aims to record the history and culture of communities whose traditions have been passed on orally rather than in writing. It began as an open space and was redesigned in 2006.
The collection covers sculpture, photographs, household goods, clothing, jewellery, kitchen utensils and hunting gear, and curators demonstrate objects for visitors rather than only displaying them. Rathwa pithora paintings include a series retelling the Mahabharata. Outside, the Bhasha-van presents India's linguistic diversity, and the Kala Kasab outlet sells crafts made by Adivasi artists.
