The story

The Trivikrama Temple, also called the Ter Temple, stands in Ter and is dedicated to Vamana, an incarnation of Vishnu. It is considered the oldest standing structure in Maharashtra. Its core, now at the back of the building, is a free-standing apsidal shrine of the type seen in early Buddhist chaitya halls, probably dating from Satavahana rule in the 2nd or 3rd century CE. A chaitya arch like those of Buddhist rock-cut sites decorates its front, and its wagon-vaulted roof recalls the Sahadeva Ratha at Mahabalipuram.

Henry Cousens and many later writers thought the shrine began as a Buddhist temple, a view M. S. Mate challenged in 1957, noting that Hindu temples also used the apsidal plan for some six centuries. The flat-roofed mandapa in front was probably added in the 6th century CE, when the temple became Hindu, and a stone image of Trivikrama likely dates from the early Chalukyas.
