The story

Thoovanayanar Thoovainathar Temple stands on East Street in the town of Tiruvarur, Tamil Nadu. The site was known in the past as Arurparavaiyunmandazhi. Shiva is the main deity, worshipped as Thoovainathar, and his consort Parvati is known here as Panchin Mennadiyal.

The shrine is counted among the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva temples praised in the Tevaram, the early medieval hymns of the Tamil Saivite Nayanar saints. Tirugnanasambandar is the poet whose verses earned it that place.
