The story

Thirukameeswarar Temple, also known as the Kokilamba-Kameeswarar or Villianur Temple, is a Shiva temple in Villianur, Puducherry. Shiva is worshipped here as Kameeswarar in the form of a lingam, and his consort Parvati as Kokilambigai. The complex covers two acres, with its shrines enclosed by concentric rectangular walls, and is run by the Puducherry government's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.

The first temple is believed to be a Chola work of the 12th century, with later additions under the Medieval Cholas and the Vijayanagar Empire; the present masonry structure dates from the 16th century. Inscriptions record Raja Narayana Sambuvarayar (1339–63), believed to have given around 850 acres watered by Ossudu Lake. The temple features in Tamil literature, including the Villai Puranam by Veeraraghava Kavi, published in 1940 by U. V. Swaminatha Iyer, and inscriptions note the founding of a Saiva math by Meignana Maamunigal Swamigal.
