The story

Tam Dil is a lake about 6 km from Saitual and 110 km from Aizawl in Mizoram. The name means 'lake of the mustard': folklore tells of a widow who looked after a huge mustard plant after her dead husband told her in a vision to care for it, until her new husband tore it out and the hole filled with water. The Fisheries Department now manages the lake as a fish-rearing reservoir, and the Tourism Department keeps a resort beside it.

The lakeside resorts, run with ZX Eden, offer boating, kayaking and other adventure activities. The lake also draws biodiversity researchers. A leaf-litter frog, Leptobrachella tamdil, was found here in 2007 and described in 2010, the rare Assam kukri snake Oligodon catenatus was recorded in 2020, and a new snake species, Smithophis mizoramensis, was reported in 2024.
