01 — The story

The story

The Salvation Army Temple stands in the centre of Aizawl, a white building in the Indo-Gothic style and one of the better-known sights of the city. Its bells ring on the hour, and at weekends the chimes carry across Aizawl. Services are held in the Mizo language, offering a view of local church life.

The Salvation Army is a Christian organisation that spreads the gospel in many languages, among them Mizo, Hmar, Paite, Bengali, Hindi, Manipuri and English. Two other spots pair well with a visit: KV Paradise, a hilltop mausoleum about 45 minutes away by road that Khawlhring built in memory of his wife Varte, and Hangi Lunglentlang, a viewpoint over the city.
