The story

Sundaresvarar Temple stands at Kundaiyur in Nagapattinam district, about a kilometre from Thirukkuvalai on the Sattiyakkudi road. Shiva is worshipped here as Sundaresvarar, also called Sokkanathasamy, with the goddess Meenakshi, and the temple is one of the Vaippu Sthalams named by the saint Sundarar.

Its story centres on Kundayur Kizhar, a devotee who served the god here. Sundarar asked the Lord to send on the paddy he had been given, and the deity had his ganas carry it to Thiruvarur. A paddy-receiving festival, the Nel Atti Vizha, is held here during Masi Maham. The temple has no gopuram but has gates on the east and west, two atti trees, a Nandi mandapa and a main shrine raised four steps above the floor. The goddess faces south from the northern mandapa, and the outer prakara has shrines to Vinayaka, Subramania with Valli and Deivanai, Gajalakshmi, Bairava, Surya and Kundayur Kizhar himself.
