The story

St. Matthias' Church, a Protestant church of the C.S.I., stands in the Vepery neighbourhood of Chennai. It began as the Chapel of Our Lady of Miracles, privately held by an Armenian merchant, Coja Petrus Uscan.

The SPCK, the Danish Protestant mission from Tranquebar, acquired it for Rs. 50,000 in November 1752, years after Uscan died, and gave it its present name. The church was consecrated in 1823.
