The story

The Church of Saint Mary stands at Saidabad in Cossimbazar, close to Baharampur in Murshidabad district. It belongs to the Armenian Apostolic Church and is dedicated to Mary, mother of Jesus. Khoja Petros Arathoon, then head of the Armenian community in Kolkata, paid for it himself and built it in 1757–58 in memory of his parents and brothers, spending two lakh thirty-six thousand rupees.

The Armenian merchant Manatsaken Vardon, founder of the Armenian Philanthropic Academy, lived at Saidabad and was buried in the church after his death on 13 October 1827. The church closed in 1860. Kolkata's Armenian Church community began a major renovation in 2005, and the church was reconsecrated in 2006.
