The story

St. Joseph's Church at Mannanam in Kottayam district is a Syro-Malabar Catholic church built on a hilltop by Kuriakose Elias Chavara, and it is a pilgrimage centre for his followers. He commissioned it on 11 May 1831 and it was completed in 1837, with later renovations in 1955 and 1996. The compound also keeps the rooms the saint lived in.

In 1846 Chavara set up Kottayam's first printing press within the church complex, and it later produced Nasrani Deepika, the first Malayalam daily. He died in 1871 and was buried at Koonammavu, but his body was moved to Mannanam in 1889. When he was declared a saint in 2014, some 60,000 people attended a thanksgiving Mass here celebrated by 100 priests.
