01 — The story

The story

St. Joseph Church, a Roman Catholic parish church, stands in the heart of Kathanpallam village, Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu, under the Dharmapuri Diocese. Catholic migrants reached the area after 1820, and around 150 Catholic families came to live here. Until a flood in 1937 stopped them crossing the river, they buried their dead at Elathagiri; burials then began in the village.

In the 1990s the nephews of Soosai gave 1.7 acres for a church and asked for it to be named after St. Joseph, since Soosai is the same name. A chapel was inaugurated on 13 February 1999, and the larger church on 23 December 2015. It became a parish in May 2017. The Franciscan Sisters of St. Aloysius Gonzaga run a college and school in the village.
