The story

St George Orthodox Church, Puthuppally, known as Puthuppally Valiya Pally, is a prominent church of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church on the Puthuppally–Changanassery road roughly a kilometre from the junction, on the east bank of the Kodoor river. The old church preserves ancient wall murals painted with vegetable dyes. It is also the resting place of Oommen Chandy, former Chief Minister of Kerala.

The feast of St George, the Puthuppally Perunal, culminates on 7 May. Ten days before, arecanut-palm flagmasts from the Puthuppally and Ericadu hamlets are carried to the church in procession and raised, followed by days of chenda melam, kathina vedi cannon shots and prayers. Firewood is brought in procession in the same way for the feast, when thousands share a mass meal, children receive their first rice from priests, and after the afternoon procession appam and chicken, cooked from the live fowls devotees bring as offerings, are distributed.
