The story

Sri Santhana Venugopala Swamy Temple is an old Hindu temple in Thettu, a village of Kurabalakota mandal in Annamayya district; the deity is also called Bala Gopala or Hucchu Gopala. The village is in the Horsley valley, about 17 km from Madanapalle. Tradition dates the temple to around 1800 years ago under the Cholas and Gangas. Legend says Krishna revealed his location in a dream to King Gangarasaru, whose chariot wheel later stuck at that spot; the king unearthed an idol, which Sage Koundinya installed. The Hoysala king Veeraballava later renovated the temple and granted it land in 1298.

A stick kept in the temple is said to have belonged to Koundinya, and a stepped tank, Bahuda Koneru, lies close by. The 12-day Srivari Brahmotsavam chariot festival in March or April draws over 100,000 people, and Mukkoti Ekadasi is marked with fasting, vigils, river bathing and Harikathas.
