The village of Panchama in Odisha is known for its temple of Panchama Ganesh, locally called Siddha Vinayaka. Legend says the 15th-century Gajapati King Purushottama Deva of Puri found the image in a hollow between two trees, Bara and Ashwattha, on his way to conquer the Kanchi Kingdom, and paid homage after consecrating it. The site then became an important centre of Ganapataya worship, keeping up Odisha's tradition of Panchadevata worship.
The idol is still held within the trunk of two big ficus trees, with the temple built around it. Around 200,000 devotees from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh come on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. The nearest railway station is at Berhampur, 12 km away, on the Chennai–Howrah line.
