The Maharaja of Patiala built Shri Kali Devi Temple in Patiala, Punjab, in 1936. He was inspired to raise the temple and to bring a six-foot statue of Maa Kali, together with the Paawan Jyot, the holy flame, all the way from Bengal to Patiala.
The temple stands opposite the Baradari Gardens. Many families worship Shri Kali Devi as their kul devi, or family goddess, and during the nine days of Navratri the temple receives a great many visitors.
