The story

Shree Rukmani Kund is a water reservoir among mountains in the Sivalik forest of Bilaspur district, Himachal Pradesh, 28 km from Bilaspur. Legend tells of a time when the Auhar area lacked water and wells failed. The ruler of Barsandh dreamt that a sacrifice of his son or daughter-in-law would bring it, and the young bride Rukmani offered herself in place of her husband, being buried alive at the chosen spot.

Grass hangs from the walls of the kund and is thought of as her hair, and people tie ribbons and bangles to it in tribute. The water is believed to cure skin ailments, though people from her own village neither drink nor bathe in it. A small temple stands here, and a Baishakhi Mela takes place each year. Auhar is the last bus stop, and the final 2 km is an unpaved kuchha road. The kund also supplies drinking and irrigation water to five Gram Panchayats.
