Shivanasamudra Falls lies on the Kaveri River in Malavalli taluk of Mandya district. Flowing southeast from Srirangapatna, the river divides around the island of Shivanasamudra, whose name means sea of Shiva, and plunges over the edge in two groups of falls before passing through the Mekedatu gorge towards Tamil Nadu.
Gagana Chukki drops the full height of about 91 metres, while Bhara Chukki falls about 69 metres. In the monsoon the falls spread to as much as 300 metres across. The site also has a place in industrial history: a hydroelectric station was set up here in 1902 to harness the water.
