The story

Shantinatha Basadi, also called Shanteshvara Basadi, is a Jain temple to the sixteenth Tirthankara, Shantinatha, in Jinanathapura village near Shravanabelagola, Channarayapatna taluk, Hassan district. The village was founded in the early 12th century by Ganga Raja, a commander under the Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana. An inscription on the pedestal of the seated Shantinatha names the builder as Recana, a general and minister of Ballala II who also built Jain temples at Lakkundi and Arasikere.

The soapstone temple is a single shrine with a closed hall, set on a platform about a metre high, and its ceiling rests on four lathe-turned pillars. Unlike more austere Jain temples of the time, such as the Akkana Basadi, its outer walls carry bold, rich relief panels of a kind more usual on Hoysala Hindu temples. It is protected by the state division of the ASI.
