Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary protects 614 sq km of dry, undulating grassland in Kurnool district, lying in the Eastern Ghats between the Nallamalai and Yerramalai hills. It was declared in 1988, six years after the endangered Great Indian Bustard was found living in these grasslands in 1982.
To protect the bustard, the Forest Department fenced off areas from grazing livestock, and people from nearby villages help by reporting sightings of the birds and their eggs.
About 32 grass species grow here, among them Aristida funiculata and Chrysopogon fulvus, along with trees such as the golden shower, flame of the forest and acacias. The land looks bare and parched in summer, but once the monsoon arrives the grasses turn green and can grow to about a metre tall.
