The story

Ratnagiri Fort, also called Ratnadurg or Bhagawati Fort, lies 2 km from Ratnagiri town and is one of the district's important forts; the Bhagawati Temple inside makes it a major draw for visitors. Built in the Bahmani period, it was won from the Adil Shah of Bijapur by Shivaji in 1670, who added watch towers on two commanding points. The Maratha admiral Kanhoji Angre strengthened the citadel in 1750–55, it was repaired under the Peshwas, and the British took it in 1818. The temple was renovated in 1950.

The fort is within walking distance of the town, and a wide road leads to its gate. Inside are the Bhagawati temple, a pond and a well, a lighthouse stands on one side, and there is a cave below the fort. Rede Buruj is the strongest of its bastions. A walk around the fort takes about an hour.
