The story

Rangayyanadurga Four-horned Antelope Wildlife Sanctuary covers 77.24 sq km in Jagalur taluk, Davanagere district, and was set up in 2011 to protect the antelope in its name. It is the only sanctuary in Karnataka for this animal, which is endemic to India and listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN. In 2017 the government added an eco-sensitive zone of 137.14 sq km around it, taking in thirty villages.

Other mammals seen here include hyena, porcupine, pangolin, jungle cat and sloth bear, along with reptiles such as krait, viper and king cobra. The white-naped tit, also classed as Vulnerable, is among the birds, and there are many butterflies. Poaching and loss of habitat remain the main threats, though numbers of the antelope are said to have risen from just 50 to 200 in the ten years to 2022.
