The Ranganathaswamy Temple stands at Nirthadi (also written Neerthadi or Niratadi), a village in Davangere district, Karnataka. The present building is a reconstruction from after the Vijayanagara period.
A Kannada inscription of 1698 in the temple grounds, read by the historian and epigraphist Benjamin Lewis Rice, records that the original temple was destroyed in 1696 by the armies of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. Baramappa Nayaka, the Chitradurga chief who ruled from 1689 to 1721, had it rebuilt in 1698. The temple is a protected monument under the Karnataka division of the Archaeological Survey of India.
