The story

Ramnabagan Wildlife Sanctuary covers 14.31 hectares of forest at Mouza Baburbag, within the municipal limits of Bardhaman (Burdwan) and about 3 km west of the railway station. Declared a reserved forest in 1960, it became a deer park in 1978 when six spotted deer were brought in, and was later made a wildlife sanctuary. A mini zoo approved inside it by the Central Zoo Authority has since been renamed Bardhaman Zoological Park.

The woodland is mostly tall teak and sal, mixed with kadbel, fig and jamun. Chital now number many, and langurs, mongooses, snakes, storks, parakeets, cuckoos, owls and spotted doves live freely in the area. The zoo keeps leopard, sloth bear, saltwater crocodile, emu, porcupine, golden and silver pheasants, sambar, rhesus macaque and star turtles, among others, and a Nature Interpretation Centre has been added for children.
