01 — The story

The story

Ramayapatnam Lighthouse stands at Ramayapatnam in Ulavapadu mandal, Prakasam district, on the Andhra Pradesh shore of the Bay of Bengal. The tower dates from 1982 and is the first lighthouse provided at this spot. Before it, ships sailing off the coast here relied on a different landmark: a church put up at Ramayapatnam in 1870.

The light is a central government responsibility, coming under the Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, and it is looked after by the Directorate at Visakhapatnam. The nearest railway link is Kavali station on the Chennai-Howrah trunk route, joined to the lighthouse by a 20 km road.
