Ramanathaswami Temple stands in the village of Tirukannapuram in Tiruvarur district, between Tiruvarur and Mayiladuthurai; the place was historically called Ramanatheeswaram. Shiva is worshipped here as Ramanathaswami, with his consort Sarivarkuzhali.
Tradition holds that Rama worshipped Shiva here, as at Rameswaram, to absolve himself of the sin of killing Ravana, and people still come to seek relief from their own sins. Sambandar praised the temple in the Tevaram, and it is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, the Shiva shrines celebrated in those hymns.
