The story

Pranhita Wildlife Sanctuary covers approximately 418.85 sq km along the Pranhita River in Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra, mainly in Aheri and Sironcha talukas. It was notified on 27 August 2014. The river, a major tributary of the Godavari, forms the boundary with Telangana here, and the forest continues into a sanctuary of the same name on the far side.

The terrain is gently undulating, with southern tropical dry deciduous forest of teak and bamboo, and grasses and reeds along the water. The river and its streams give year-round water to tiger, leopard, sloth bear, dhole, nilgai, sambar, chital, porcupine and langur. Large carnivores use it as a corridor between the two states, which gives the sanctuary its importance for wildlife movement.
