The story

The Pareshnath Jain Temple, also written Parasnath, is a Jain temple complex in Kolkata founded in 1867 and an important pilgrimage place for the city's Jain community. It takes its popular name from Parshvanath, the 23rd Tirthankara, while the image in the main sanctum is of Shitalnath, with diamonds set into the forehead.

The best-known feature is a ghee lamp in the main sanctum that is said to have stayed alight ever since the temple opened. Paintings by Ganesh Muskare and glittering chandeliers decorate the interior. An old image of Parshvanath, worked in gold and silver and set with diamonds and other gems, is one of the treasures of the complex.

Around the main shrine stand four further temples, dedicated to Chandaprabhu, Dadaguru, Kushal Suri and Mahavira.
