The story

Outram Ghat is a riverfront ghat on the Hooghly in Kolkata, near Babu Ghat and within sight of Howrah Bridge. Built in the late 19th century, it is named after General Sir James Outram, and its story is bound up with the city's colonial trade. Today it is a popular place for an evening walk by the water.

In its early years the ghat was a busy landing. It was the main berth for ships sailing to East Bengal and Burma, and its steps were crowded with cargo boats, merchants and passengers.

The atmosphere is calmer now, although the ghat fills up during Durga Puja, when it becomes one of the main sites for immersing the idols. A river cruise service called Cruise Cuisine departs from the pier on Sundays, running between Sutanuti Ghat, Baghbazar and Belur Math before coming back.
