The story

Norbugang Chorten is a stupa at Yuksom in Gyalshing district, Sikkim, raised after the coronation of the first Chogyal in 1642. Three lamas led by Lhatsun Chempo crowned Phunshog, giving him the name Namgyal, and the Lepchas and Magars who came for the ceremony presented the lamas with many treasures. The lamas then built the chorten from earth and stones gathered across Sikkim, burying the gifts inside it like a time capsule; the consecration lasted 21 days.

The stupa now stands in Norbugang Park, 42 km from Pelling, with a prayer hall and a large prayer wheel. Facing it, under a large cryptomeria, is the reputed Coronation Throne, a whitewashed stone seat with four places, the highest meant for Lhatsun Chempo. A footprint here is attributed to one of the lamas, and water from the small Kathok Lake was used in the crowning. The site is part of a pilgrimage circuit with Dubdi, Pemayangtse, Rabdentse, Sanga Choeling, Khecheopalri Lake and Tashiding.
