The story

Yuksom is a small town at about 1,780 m (5,840 ft) in Gyalshing district of West Sikkim, remembered as the earliest royal seat of Sikkim. Its name is usually explained as the meeting place of three learned monks: the three Tibetan lamas who came together here and consecrated Phuntsog Namgyal as the first Chogyal, a title combining worldly and religious rule.

In 1642 Phuntsog Namgyal was crowned at Norbugang, and he made Yuksom his seat. A stone throne still marks the site of the coronation. Close by stands the Norbugang Chorten, believed to have been blessed by Guru Padmasambhava and said to represent the third eye; pilgrims come here to pray. The town also lies below Dubdi Monastery, the oldest in Sikkim.
