Formerly called Ross Island, this small island lies a short boat trip from Sri Vijaya Puram and once served as the administrative centre of the British colonial government. A major earthquake in 1941 badly damaged it, and during the Second World War Japanese forces occupied it and ran a prisoner-of-war camp, where captives endured forced labour, torture and executions.
Colonial-era remains include a church, a bakery, a tennis court, a swimming pool and a golf course, now set among dense greenery. Subhas Chandra Bose, who led the Indian National Army, is thought to have come here in 1943, and the island was renamed in his honour in December 2018. A sound and light show on its history runs at 5.30 pm every day except Wednesday.
