The story

Nellukkadai Mariamman Temple is a Hindu temple in Nagapattinam with a rajagopuram and an enclosing prakara. Its presiding goddess, Mariamman, is shown with four hands, and the temple draws many worshippers. Within it are shrines to Vinayaga, Subramania, Kathavaraya Swamy, Periyachchi and Ayyanar, while Ellaiyamman has a shrine of her own with all her attendants.

Each year in the Tamil month of Chittirai the temple holds a chedil festival for Kathavaraya Swamy. The chedil is a tall post with a long beam at its top, from which a person under a vow is hung by hooks and swung round in the air. Parents who prayed here for children and had their wish granted take part with the child, whom the priest carries on the chedil. The temple is run by the state's Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department.
