Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka, at 1,925 metres, and stands in the Chandra Drona hills of the Western Ghats in Chikkamagaluru taluk. It is ranked as the 23rd highest summit in the Western Ghats, with the peak of Seethalayyanagiri close by.
The mountain is named after a small shrine on top dedicated to Mullappa Swamy, a sage believed to have meditated in shallow caves just below the summit; the caves can be entered, though their passage into the shrine has been closed off. Little is firmly known about the deity, though the area has a strong Siddha tradition. Today a tarred road and 464 steps lead to the top, which also carries a police radio relay station. Trekkers still prize the older path, known as Sarpadari, which climbed to the peak before the road was built.
