The story

Baba Budangiri, also known as Chandradrona because its ridges curve like a crescent moon, is a range in the Western Ghats of Chikkamagaluru district. Its main peaks are Baba Budangiri at 1,895 metres and Mullayanagiri, the highest at 1,930 metres, and a well-known trekking trail links the two.

The hills are covered in coffee estates among the oldest in India. Tradition credits the Sufi saint Baba Budan with bringing coffee beans from Mocha in Yemen in the 17th century. His shrine, set among three caves, is visited by both Muslims and Hindus and shares its site with the Datta Peetha, a place of worship for Dattatreya. It also honours an 11th-century Sufi, Dada Hayath. This shared character has made the shrine a subject of political and religious dispute.
