The story

Mangalavanam Bird Sanctuary is a small green patch in the middle of Kochi, beside the Kerala High Court, with busy city streets all around. Its mangroves, wetlands and water plants give resident and migratory birds space to feed, nest and roost.

Species recorded here include herons, egrets, kingfishers, terns, darters and migrant ducks such as pintail and garganey. A 2006 survey counted 194 birds from 32 species, and 17 kinds of butterfly have been noted. The sanctuary is valued as one of the few natural green spaces left in the city.
