The story

Mangal Lake, also called Mangal Aeri, is a reservoir in Mugappair, Chennai, that fills with rain. Several hundred years ago it supplied water to the village of Mugappair, but it declined after the Ambattur Industrial Estate was set up next to it and waste water from the factories began to flow in.

Restoration began in 2005 with a compound wall around about 30 acres, and the first phase of the renewed lake opened to the public in July 2009. The water body covers 5.32 acres and is circled by a lit walking track 520 m long and 4.5 m wide, with an area set aside for children's play. A further park was planned for a second phase that has not begun. An Achalathamman temple stands on the bank.
