Mahi Bajaj Sagar Dam crosses the Mahi River about 16 km from Banswara in southern Rajasthan. Planned from the late 1960s as a multipurpose interstate project and named after the industrialist Jamnalal Bajaj, a close associate of Mahatma Gandhi, it was started in 1972 and dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 1 November 1983. A hydroelectric station on the river, commissioned in 1986, supplies power to Banswara and to parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
The Mahi rises in Madhya Pradesh, crosses the Vagad region of Rajasthan and flows on through Gujarat to the Arabian Sea, a course of about 583 km; its tributaries include the Anas, Chap, Erav, Nori and Jakham. The many islands in the area have earned Banswara the nickname City of Hundred Islands, and the dam draws crowds in the monsoon. The Kagdi Pick Up Weir and the Tripura Sundari Temple are within easy reach.
