The story

The Madayi Mosque, also known as Madayi Palli, the Pazhayangadi Mosque or the Malik ibn Dinar Mosque, is a Shafi'i Sunni mosque at Pazhayangadi in Kannur district and one of the oldest in Kerala. It is believed to have been founded by Malik ibn Dinar, and keeps a block of white marble that he is said to have brought from Mecca. The Qissat Shakarwati Farmad lists Madayi among ten early mosques built in Malik Dinar's time, including those at Kodungallur, Kollam and Mangalore.

An Arabic inscription on a copper slab gives the founding year as 518 AH, or 1124–25 CE, and Madayi's history also appears in the 16th-century Tuhfat ul-Mujahideen. In 2006 the old building was pulled down and a new one in the Indo-Saracenic style went up on the original foundations. The date plaque was kept and set into the new floor, though the date has worn away, and an old wall with the original qibla mark still stands at the rear.
