The story

Madan Gopal Temple in Bishnupur, West Bengal, is a Krishna temple founded in 1665 by Churamoni, also called Siromoni or Siramani Devi, the wife of Mallabhum's king Bir Singha II, according to its inscribed plaque. It follows the pancha-ratna, or five-tower, form, one of the ratna styles that emerged in medieval Bengal, and is the only temple of this kind in Bishnupur built of laterite.

Square in plan, about 11.3 metres a side and 13.7 metres high, it carries five sikharas on a curved roof: an octagonal central tower and four square corner towers of stepped pida type. Decoration is sparse, limited to some lotus motifs above the porch arches, and the solidly built temple has a character quite unlike the other large temples of Bishnupur. It is protected by the Archaeological Survey of India.
