The story

Long Island lies about 80 km north of Port Blair in the East Baratang group of the Andamans, east of Porlob Island, and falls under Rangat taluk. It has no road network: boats reach it from Port Blair or from Rangat. Three villages, Long Village, Middle Village and Lalaji Bay, share a power house, a boat-building yard, a school, a hospital and a forest range office; Parkinson Point at the northern tip was once lived on too.

For visitors the draw is the coast. Merk Bay and Lalaji Bay are both popular as picnic beaches, and the island suits beach camping. Rest houses are run mainly by the forest department, and a trip across to nearby Guitar Island is a common addition.
