01 — The story

The story

Kumatagi is a village on the edge of Vijayapura known for the summer resort of Mohammad Adil Shah, who ruled the Adil Shahi kingdom from 1627 to 1656 CE. He had it built so that the royal household could escape the fierce heat of the capital during the hottest months of the year.

The layout is planned around water, which was led in channels around and between the buildings to keep the grounds cool. The group takes in a lake, a palace and decorated royal bathhouses set among green lawns, the baths hinting at the elaborate bathing customs of the court. Paintings preserved on the walls show scenes of life under the Adil Shahis, offering a rare look at the dress, customs and daily routines of the period.
